Introduction to Scopic Templates

[2015-07-21 Tue 11:55] Been trying to figure out how frame the model village concept, and it just hit me that it should be approached in the same way as studyhall is being done – as a template. Studyhall was conceived as a template that included a body of knowledge that could be used anywhere to establish a school based on the studyhall concept.

Templates are defined within a specific scope in both time and space that can be used to define any number of different kinds of projects, from businesses & organizations, to software projects or the design and management of towns, parks or even individual buildings.

Business Plans and Master Plans provide some of the elements in a Scopic template, but also include all of the designs, organizational knowledge, procedures, rules that constitute what is being designed, managed or built.

Plan

The Plan is a document that outlines goals, design, methodology and implementation. Plans in a template perform many of the same functions as a traditional Business Plan or Master Plan for urban development projects.

Primer

The Primer is a collection or library of mutually exclusive topics that are stratified into 10 topic levels, which can be treated as a kind of encyclopedia, or organized hierarchically or sequentially so that different sub collections of topics can be treated as a book, a course curriculum, an dictionary/encyclopedia or individual articles.

Patterns

A Pattern Language is a collection of design patterns which constitute good practice with a field of expertise. Modeled on Christopher Alexander's A Pattern Language.

The book creates a new language, what the authors call a pattern language derived from timeless entities called patterns. As they write on page xxxv of the introduction, "All 253 patterns together form a language." Patterns describe a problem and then offer a solution. In doing so the authors intend to give ordinary people, not only professionals, a way to work with their neighbors to improve a town or neighborhood, design a house for themselves or work with colleagues to design an office, workshop or public building such as a school.

Chenla is developing two templates in house, The Studyhall Template and The Village Template, which both of which you'll be hearing much more about in the coming weeks.
